Will Golden Hellos attract new talent?

How to attract - and keep - workers during the staffing squeeze continues to be a big issue.

This week, we reported on how employers are offering sign-up bonuses of up to £500 to attract quality workers in what has been termed an 'unparallelled'  situation that could well have knock on effects for consumers.

David Torrington, managing director at Sky Recruitment Solutions, which also has a sister white collar recruitment company called Capella Professional said it is half-way through filling 200 jobs for online retailer Buy It Direct, at its new 563,000 sq ft warehouse near Castle Donington.

Mr Torrington said that business is offering a £500 attendance bonus for new starters – with half paid after eight weeks and the remainder after a second eight-week period.

He said: "In 20 years, I have never seen anything like this in the sector, it is unparalleled.

"Never before have employers been offering such high incentives to encourage staff to join them.

"My concern is how businesses maintain this going forward. With higher rates of pay, there is a danger that these extra costs will be passed onto consumers."

Recruitment and Employment Confederation said the high demand for workers is a combination of the post-Covid economic recovery and a lack of EU workers in the UK following Brexit.

Insurance giant Hastings Direct has become the latest firm to offer staff a cost-of-living payment. It says that by putting colleagues first, it can get the best service for its customers.

The £500 payment is part of a wider package of support that also includes those earning up to £45,000 getting an immediate minimum 5 per cent pay rise.

Pay reviews would also be brought forward for those earning more than £45,000. Company directors and executive team members have not been included in the measures.

Hastings Direct said it was also providing extra support to colleagues including those on extended absence such as maternity or sick leave, and those who had only just joined the business.

And it is not just about doing the right thing or retaining staff but about good business sense.

As Toby van der Meer, Hastings CEO said, happy staff mean happy cudstomers 'enabling us to grow the company profitably and sustainably and allowing us to invest in the communities we serve.'
