December's here and decarbonisation decisions top the Christmas wish list

Story 1

Here we go then! Advent calendars are up, and most likely open, by the time you are reading this - and that's just mine!  While I'll be hoping door 18 has a solid gold delivery for the nation in the form of the World Cup - nice to add to the recent T20 cricket - the 43 of the 56 years of hurt tell me a little slab of chocolate would be a better expectation level to set. Maybe even a postage stamp-sized image of the nativity will teach my fan-boy naivety.

Now when it comes to opening doors professionally this past week, the business community was very welcoming of Shadow Energy Secretary Ed Miliband's stay on the Humber.  A frank, open and honest roundtable chat with some of the key players in the estuary's decarbonisation dream was clearly of huge importance - he could well be contributing significantly at future cabinets given the near doubling of anticipated vote share, pollsters are predicting for his Labour party.

Ensuring the message is across government and opposition is vital, so to hear how barriers were explained and needs underlined following my interview with him, was very encouraging.  It will hopefully resonate with Downing Street too.

He was barely back in his own constituency as Harbour Energy announced they were pushing on with their own plans for the Humber, as Viking CCS enters its statutory consultation period. I'm sure many of the voices that enjoyed Mr Miliband's ear will be backing this too.  It is the South Bank strand of pipeline infrastructure for CO2 storage that brings cleaner refining, power generation and links to the emerging Immingham Green Energy Terminal. From here we could be looking at hydrogen production and carbon trading - importing others' emissions could be big business for UK Plc and the Humber particularly.

Story 2

Further details have emerged about the need for one of the Humber's longest standing businesses to invest big in a new base.

Smith & Nephew, synonymous with the city of Hull - largely due to the gateway presence and impressive light display - has this week submitted its application for a £94m base at Melton West
The eight mile move along the A63 seems to stack up an incredible opportunity for one of the key operators, innovators and employers we have in our midst.

It has been open how long? Hull stadium milestone celebrated in photographs

Image

Hull's "super-stadium" clocked up 20 years since it opened this week.

The MKM, following the recent name-change from KCom and prior to that "the KC", is a phenomenal legacy to the city from the successful sale of the telephone company by the local council.

I urge you to take a few minutes and enjoy this excellent piece of near-time nostalgia from my colleague Jack Bowman.

Undoubtedly a thing of envy for many neighbours in the football and rugby league pyramids, the stadium also serves as an exceptional place to do business - as I have found in the couple of years that Hull has been part of my significantly expanded Humber patch.

I've yet to take in a match there though, and despite my best efforts of willing the FA Cup balls to pair my mighty Mariners with the Tigers, we'll have to wait for Round Four. With league-above opposition in Fulham and Burton to negotiate respectively on home turf, who knows...
