Welcome decision for Energy Estuary ambition as CCS power plant approved

Story 1

The Humber's role at the forefront of the push to Net Zero cannot be underplayed. And once again we've seen the importance outlined with another huge first, that could unlock the thirst to make a difference.

While approval of a new coal mine on the other side of the country grabbed huge headlines, yards of column inches and has left many with quizzical looks and questions over absolute commitment to the cause, a key decision from Westminster for northern Lincolnshire does, in some way, bring a form of balance on this path.

SSE Thermal and Equinor's Keadby Three Carbon Capture Power Station is a critical piece of the whole Net Zero Humber jigsaw - which itself forms the lion's share of the East Coast Cluster ambition.  Nationally too, it represents five per cent of the entire UK 2030 target - as a single project.

This big tick on the develoment consent order application hopefully sets a ball rolling to ensure that even when emissions are generated from fossil fuels - like those to emerge from beneath Cumbria - they will do precious little damage as a network of pipelines to collect the bad stuff becomes ever-more viable.

Whether the same can be said for the government's reputation in handling its credentials on clean remains to be seen - but accelerating the agenda to enable some final investment decisions to deliver the £15 billion bounty on these banks would be most welcome - should it wish to dig itself out of this particular black hole.

Manufacturing breakthrough is just the  ticket as orange passes go green in Hull

Story 2

We've all used them, and probably never given the underside a second thought. Too busy making sure it goes in the machine the right way, the conductor gets the right one and the timings and locations on the front are as intended. But a £230,000 programme uniting the University of Hull's chemistry, physics and engineering faculties with a multi-national manufacturer with a key Hull base, has flipped that over.

Paragon ID is responsible for the production of tickets for UK rail operators, and now they have been cleaned up in a significant success that will literally deliver tonnes of savings. The city council has also contributed to a true collaboration. Here's to many more.

Tickets for Net Zero please, starting on the Humber and calling around the globe once again!

Offshore wind blows into primary school minds as career seeds sown by RWE

story 4

RWE is investing big in Grimsby, as it prepares to bring Sofia offshore wind farm to the port, joining Triton Knoll and Humber Gateway.

It is great to see staff looking to inspire young minds in the burgeoning industry too. The more children and teenagers get to see of a largely hidden industry, the better in my mind.

Suggestions for schools are welcome, so please do share!
