'I want to be the Mary Berry of the crafting world' - Sara Davies

Story 1

After the dismal news of the last two weeks led by a number of high profile business failures, it makes a refreshing change to bring more positive, lighter news, including a healthy round-up of regional deals, a large investment into a green energy innovator and the long-awaited launch of this year's North East BusinessLive Awards.

And while it might be half term for some, it was back to school for entrepreneur Sara Davies, who delivered an inspirational talk to pupils at Dame Allan's Schools in Fenham, Newcastle, where she revealed her latest ambitions.

Since launching Crafter's Companion during her fourth year at University of York, Sara's been no stranger to the small screen, appearing on shopping and hobby channels to promote her products, before graduating to primetime appearances on Dragons' Den, Strictly Come Dancing and the forthcoming Master of Ceremonies.

But now she has her sights sets on becoming the leading authority in crafting, an ambition which will see her business invest a considerable sum into raising her online prescence.

Sara's lecture had some powerful messages for pupils too, namely how you can achieve anything you want with the drive, passion and determination to succeed. As she told the pupils: "I've got where I have because of my mindset."

£36m investment into green hydrogen pioneer GeoPura paves way for growth

Story 2

Green hydrogen pioneer GeoPura was toasting a significant deal on Monday, which will boost green skills in the North East and Midlands, while also allowing it to scale its business.

GeoPura – which has bases in Newcastle and Nottingham – secured a £36m investment in a round led by GM Ventures and Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital, with participation from SWEN CP and Siemens Energy Ventures.

Its green hydrogen business is already doing great things, currently providing hydrogen power to the likes of Balfour Beatty, HS2, National Grid and the BBC.

This new investment will see it accelerate its hydrogen power generation technology which is replacing diesel-fuelled generators with its Hydrogen Power Units (HPU), helping the UK on its zero-emissions journey.

HPUs are used for temporary, supplementary, off-grid and backup power and GeoPura plans to expand the use of hydrogen into other areas such as EV charging and supplementary grid power.

GeoPura now plans to mass manufacture HPUs alongside its partner Siemens Energy, increase the production of green hydrogen to fuel the units and drive green skills around the UK.

North East's top businesses to be recognised at new look awards night

Story 3

Dust off your dresses and tuxes - the main event in the North East business calendar is back.

And the North East BusinessLive Awards are returning with a new set of categories, to celebrate innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and creativity, as well as some of the people making a difference in the region's business community.

In a change from previous years, shortlists in three parts of the North East - Tyneside and Northumberland; Sunderland, Durham and South Tyneside and Teesside - will be announced on ChronicleLive, TeessideLive and BusinessLive and in the pages of The Journal and The Gazette.

Journal editor Graeme Whitfield said: "It's great to have the Business Awards back. We've been celebrating the best of North East business for more than two decades and hope to be doing so for many years yet.

"We've freshened up the categories this year to reflect the changing world of work but the focus of the awards is very much the same - to recognise the great work which goes on in our business community. I know from going to the awards over many years that winning - or even just taking part - can mean so much to boosting staff morale and raising businesses' profile."

Opinion: Helping young people get a grip on the world of work

Image

Recruitment and retention are increasingly difficult for businesses and employers across all industry sectors in the North East.

Not only are there widespread problems recruiting, businesses are having trouble retaining staff and finding those with the right skills in the first place.

This employment landscape provides the backdrop for the activities of one of NE1's most long-standing and successful initiatives, its youth engagement programme NE1 CAN, which provides a free programme of engagement and events delivering careers insight sessions to young people across Newcastle and the North East, the only one of its kind in the region available to all students, regardless of academic abilities.

Working with cross-sector businesses, the programme offers real-life experiences and insight into different jobs and careers. Since its launch, it has worked with 82 education providers and over 7,500 young people.

Many of the roles highlighted by employers are completely unknown to most young people; they have never heard of account executives, SEOs, conveyancers, paralegals, estimators, dry liners, the list goes on, and this lack of knowledge extends across all industry sectors.

NE1 CAN brings these roles, job titles and businesses to life through in-person events. Young people get the chance to see the workings of different organisations, speak to people within businesses, and learn about the many and varied roles and opportunities available here in Newcastle and the wider North East.
