According to the report, the recruitment demand in the country has been almost flat in January 2022, down by one percent in comparison to the previous month. The reduction in recruitment demand reflects the cautious approach of Indian employers due to the new form of coronavirus, Omicron. According to the 'Monster Employment Index (MEI)', a comprehensive monthly job analysis report by Monster India, recruitment demand in the retail sector saw a decline of eight per cent compared to December due to the third wave of the pandemic. Apart from this, travel and tourism also saw a decline of eight percent, while the home appliance sector saw a decline of five percent during this period. According to this report, the demand for recruitment in agriculture sector increased by five percent and in BFSI sector by four percent during January 2022 as compared to December 2021. Apart from this, the health services, biotech, life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors including education, telecommunications/ISP saw a marginal decline of one percent in the recruitment demand during January 2022 as compared to December 2021.

On the other hand, India's unemployment rate has come down to 6.57 percent in January 2022, the lowest level since March 2021, after the relaxation of curbs amid decreasing cases of Omicron infection, a non-governmental organization monitoring the state of the economy CMIE said that the unemployment rate has seen a significant decline in this month and it has come down to 6.57 percent. However, the unemployment rate in urban India still remains high. CMIE said that in January, the unemployment rate in urban areas stood at 8.16 percent, while it was recorded at 5.84 percent in rural areas. Earlier, in December 2021, the total unemployment rate was estimated at 7.91 percent, in which the rate of urban area was 9.30 percent and the rate of rural area was 7.28 percent. CMIE had estimated in December, 2021 that the total number of unemployed in the country is about 53 million, of which a major part is women.
