TransPennine Express loses rail franchise over "continuous cancellations"

Story 1

Services run by rail operator TransPennine Express have finally been taken under public control following a long period of "continuous cancellations" (and as many have noted, not before time).

Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced the train services will be nationalised on May 28 after months of delays and cancellations, a move which will be welcomed by its thousands of passengers and Labour metro mayors including Jamie Driscoll, who has been calling for action for months.

How much of a difference it makes is yet to be seen, as the Government's Operator of Last Resort will use the same trains and employ the same staff. And as Mr Harper says: "This is not a silver bullet and will not instantaneously fix a number of challenges being faced, including Aslef's actions which are preventing TransPennine Express from being able to run a full service – once again highlighting why it's so important that the railways move to a seven-day working week.

"We have played our part but Aslef now need to play theirs by calling off strikes and the rest day working ban, putting the very fair and reasonable pay offer to a democratic vote of their members."

Expansion adventures ahead for CBK

Story 2

The growing community of wild swimmers, paddle boarders and surfers along the region's coast is aiding growth at a popular North East watersports company, which has opened a new retail store.

CBK Adventures was launched in 2014, operating from a small shop in Cullercoats which is known for its kayak tours along the River Tyne, and seal-spotting expeditions around St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

Now the firm has hundreds of products on sale at its new Base Camp store, which also has training facilities to be used to deliver watersports training courses, from the likes of British Canoeing, and first aid training.

Simon Laing, founder and director of CBK Adventures, said: "Base Camp marks the culmination of months of hard work and planning. Our vision is to create a unique retail experience where watersports lovers can shop for tried and trusted brands and speak to experts who use these products day in and day out on the water. Whether you are new to paddling or an experienced pro, our hand-selected ranges offer something for everyone."
